Building Better Futures: Philadoptables Helps ACCT Philly Transform Shelter Dog Play Spaces

For more than a decade, Philadoptables has believed in one simple truth:
when you give animals the space, care, and compassion they deserve, their lives change.

This year, that belief comes full circle.

Philadoptables is proud to announce its $10,000 contribution as a Guardian-level sponsor of ACCT Philly’s Outdoor Dog Play Yard Project — a transformative initiative that will create safer, healthier, and more enriching environments for thousands of shelter dogs every year.

And for us, this moment carries special meaning.

A Full-Circle Moment for Philadelphia’s Dogs

In 2012, Philadoptables funded and built three shelter dog play yards and a pavilion at ACCT Philly. . At the time, the need was urgent: shelter dogs had little access to outdoor space, minimal opportunity for socialization, and few ways to relieve stress in a healthy, structured environment.

Fast forward to today — and the vision is bigger, smarter, and more impactful than ever.

ACCT Philly, the city’s only open-intake animal shelter, serves animals who often arrive in crisis: surrendered, lost, abandoned, injured, or recovering from trauma. While many improvements have been made to the facility over the years, outdoor enrichment space remained one of the shelter’s most critical needs, particularly for dogs in isolation who previously had no dedicated fenced outdoor areas.

That is now changing.

What the New Play Yard Project Includes

In partnership with Animal Arts, the nation’s leading shelter design firm, ACCT Philly is undergoing a major expansion and renovation of its outdoor dog spaces. This project will include:

  • 🐕 Four brand-new play yards
  • 🛠 Renovation of existing outdoor areas
  • 🌱 Installation of specialized K9 Grass for safety and durability
  • 🔒 Upgraded fencing
  • 🌤 Shaded spaces designed for comfort and safe playgroups

These thoughtfully designed spaces will support improved behavior, safer socialization, and stronger adoption outcomes for shelter dogs.

Why These Yards Matter

Outdoor play yards do far more than provide exercise.

They give dogs the ability to:

A. Walk, run, explore, and release stress
B. Co-mingle safely and assess compatibility with other dogs
C. Interact with potential adopters off-leash in a natural environment

These moments are essential for building confidence, reducing anxiety, improving behavior, and helping each dog put their best paw forward when meeting their future family.

Simply put:
these yards save lives.

Honored to Help Move This Project Forward

With the project now fully funded and nearing completion, Philadoptables is proud to have played a key role in bringing this vision to life — delivering meaningful, long-term benefits for shelter dogs and the compassionate teams who support them.

“This is a full-circle moment for us,” the Philadoptables team shared.
“In 2012, Philadoptables funded and built three shelter dog play yards and a pavilion at ACCT Philly. Today, we are honored to continue that legacy and invest in a future where every shelter dog has the space they need to heal, thrive, and find a home.”

While Philadoptables is not formally partnering with ACCT Philly on this project, we are deeply proud to contribute to this critical effort — and to stand alongside many other sponsors and supporters who understand that every investment, large or small, changes lives.

Building a More Compassionate Future — Together

This project represents everything Philadoptables stands for: compassion, collaboration, and commitment to animals who need us most.

Together, with ACCT Philly and the broader Philadelphia animal welfare community, we are building a stronger, kinder future —
one yard, one dog, one life at a time.

A Morning of Smiles, Gratitude, and Wagging Tails on Positively Philly

Today was a truly special day for the Philadoptables family as we had the honor of appearing on Positively Philly to share our mission, our work, and the incredible animals we’re so lucky to support.

Our president, Michelle, summed it up perfectly after the show — the two hosts were so warm and wonderful. They were genuine, kind, and it was clear how much they truly love animals. From the moment we walked onto the set, we felt welcomed, supported, and inspired by the positivity in the room.

We are beyond grateful for the opportunity to highlight the work we do in the community and to introduce viewers to some of the amazing dogs who are still waiting for their forever homes. Days like today remind us why we do what we do — because every animal deserves a chance, and every adoption creates a new beginning.

To everyone who tuned in, supported us, shared our story, or continues to believe in our mission — thank you. Your compassion fuels everything we do.

And if there’s one message we hope sticks with people after today, it’s this:
Adoption is always better than buying. When you adopt, you don’t just bring home a pet — you save a life, open space for another animal in need, and become part of a much bigger story of hope.

From all of us at Philadoptables, thank you for being part of that story. 🐾💙

Philadoptables Honored with Dogs’ Best Friend Award at the 2025 National Dog Show

Philadoptables was proudly recognized with the Dogs’ Best Friend Award by the Philadelphia Kennel Club during this year’s National Dog Show ceremonies at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. This distinguished award celebrates the organization’s 16 years of dedication to improving the lives of homeless, ill, and injured animals throughout the Greater Philadelphia region.

Honoring 16 Years of Impact

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR): A Humane Solution Community Cats

There’s no question about it — Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is one of the most humane and effective ways to manage community cat populations. While debates about outdoor cats continue, one fact remains clear: TNR works.

Recently, Philadoptables was featured in Human Animal Support Services’ (HASS) blog, Streetwise Solutions: The Lifesaving Power of TNR and Community Support, which highlighted our work and the lifesaving impact of community collaboration in Philadelphia. It’s an honor to be recognized among organizations across the country leading the way in humane, sustainable cat care.

Philadoptables’ Commitment to Community Cats

With an estimated 400,000 stray cats in Philadelphia, Philadoptables is dedicated to building a safer, healthier future for both cats and people. Through partnerships with local rescues, veterinarians, and volunteers, we help prevent unwanted litters, reduce shelter burdens, and support those caring for outdoor cats every day.

Our team provides funding for medical care, supplies for caretakers, and resources for responsible pet ownership — all to ensure that every animal has the opportunity to live safely and humanely within our community. Learn more

Why TNR Works

TNR is simple but powerful: cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their outdoor homes. This interrupts the breeding cycle, improves health, and reduces nuisance behaviors such as fighting and spraying — creating calmer, more compassionate neighborhoods.

As Diana Bauer, Vice President of Philadoptables, explains:

“Addressing all concerns during cat trapping is essential, as it may be the only opportunity for these cats to receive veterinary care.”

This hands-on approach ensures even the most vulnerable cats get the care they need — sometimes for the first and only time in their lives.

Supporting Caretakers

Behind every managed colony are devoted caretakers who feed, monitor, and protect community cats year-round. Philadoptables proudly supports these local heroes by providing food, traps, shelters, and medical funding to keep colonies healthy and stable.

When caretakers have what they need, cats are less stressed, better nourished, and easier to monitor — creating a lasting positive impact on both the cats and their neighborhoods.

How You Can Help

  • Donate: Support the cost of spay/neuter surgeries, vaccines, and medical care.
  • Volunteer: Assist with trapping, transportation, or post-surgery recovery.
  • Foster: Offer kittens or injured cats a safe space to heal.
  • Advocate: Share the importance of TNR and humane community-cat management.

The Bigger Picture

Supporting TNR saves lives, reduces suffering, and strengthens neighborhoods. Each cat fixed, each volunteer hour given, and each donation made helps Philadelphia move toward a more compassionate, sustainable future for animals and people alike.
